I have found that the process of learning is made infinitely easier if there is enjoyment involved. With each student I have taught, I have tried to instil in them my own love and enthusiasm for the subjects and identify exactly what it is within each subject that the student is drawn to. Adaptability is therefore at the heart of my teaching style, as I believe it's important to cater each program to the specific strengths and needs of each student. I do, however, understand that a great deal of time must be spent on the areas that the student finds less interesting and more difficult to take on board. These are the areas in which a clear understanding of the student's needs comes in to play because I can then teach in a way that prioritises their learning style.
This method has been tried and tested with all the students I have taught so far. Whilst on my year abroad in Russia I spent several months volunteering in an orphanage outside Moscow and was responsible for teaching English to the children who were between the ages of 6-15. The daily classes I conducted focussed on all aspects of the language and I relished the challenge of such a large range of ages and abilities but also loved being a support for the children outside of the classroom. Following university, I spent a period of time teaching a 6-year-old Russian boy at his family home in Moscow. I developed a program that focussed mainly on improving his reading and writing skills in the English language, as his parents hoped he would eventually apply for top schools in England.
Back in London, I began teaching a boy several days a week for a sustained period, getting him ready for his school entrance exams. My teaching focussed mainly on English and French, with some extra support in History and I was there to talk through any worries he had about the process in general. He ended up getting into the school of his choice and as a result, we continued working together for his GCSEs, building on the skills that we had developed to that point.
I have always been fascinated by foreign languages and have relished the many opportunities I have had to pass on my enthusiasm to other students. After growing up in South London, with a hiatus spent living in South-West France, I moved to Bristol for three years to complete an undergraduate degree in French and Russian. This gave me the opportunity to live and study abroad for a year of my course, which I chose to do in Bordeaux and Yaroslavl. This was an incredibly rewarding and interesting year which instilled in me a sense of independence and confidence in my spoken languages.
Following university and several jobs, my career took an interesting turn when I got accepted onto the Direct Entry Detective Constable Scheme in The Met Police. I have loved my two and a half years in this role and have learned invaluable life skills, but I have decided it is not my calling and want to bring about a career transition. I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching in the past and consider it a very rewarding endeavour to help children achieve their goals academically, so I would love to return to it in the interim. I will be very flexible with my time and will be able to dedicate all my efforts towards ensuring the children get the support they need. Most important of all, I will put all my effort into ensuring the learning process is enjoyable and fun for the student.
My greatest passion in life is music and I have reached Grade 8 level on the clarinet and am a keen guitar player. I am working towards producing my own music and have regularly played live. I also love playing sport and believe it's a very important endeavour for us all. I have played football to a competitive level and I run several times a week.
