Teaching Experience

I taught a family of two young boys, teaching them maths during my gap year, one for 11+ and the other for GCSE. The boys had completely different personalities, which required different approaches to sit through material they really struggled with. I found it a great personal challenge and was hugely rewarded by the success they both enjoyed in their exams.

For the second part of my gap year, I spent six months teaching at a boarding school in South Korea called NLCS Jeju. It was a branch of the NLCS UK school, and so the curriculum was quite demanding and contrary to what a lot of the students were used to. My job consisted of a few English and history lessons and helping the young students through their homework every night. The boarding house covered a wide range of ages, so I learned a great deal about the sort of advice and teaching I could give to young students based on their age and interests. On my return home from Korea, I also taught GCSE physics to a girl who was really struggling with the course. I helped her with the material, and a lot of general exam techniques since her confidence and approach to exams were holding her back immensely. She went on to get an A when she had been getting Cs and Ds in her practice papers before I arrived.

About Max W

I work as a freelance TV researcher (essentially a junior producer), which means that I'm tied to various shows for the length of the production. This can be anything from historical documentaries to current affairs programmes to prime-time studio entertainment shows. Outside of the TV and the teaching world, I enjoy active holidays like hiking in the Alps or sailing in the Mediterranean. I occasionally force my housemates into Sunday morning park runs.
