I was often asked for help at school by other students and this quickly made me realise that I enjoy teaching. It was a rewarding experience when someone asked me for help, not understanding what to do and I was able to explain the situation to them, allowing them to gain a new understanding and perspective on the topic. I then started locally teaching others in mathematics, ranging from teaching a gifted primary school student to helping a GCSE student go from a grade 4 to a grade 8 and helping an A-level student understand a topic she simply couldn’t get her head around.
I am now teaching mathematics full time. My students are happy with my work and I am glad to help them further their knowledge and understanding of such a useful, important and at times beautiful topic. There is nothing quite as satisfying to me as seeing a student’s face when they understand something for the first time or when you show them a pleasant way to solve a difficult problem using a bit of critical thinking.
Originally from Derbyshire, I attended the University of Cambridge for both my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in mathematics. I often look back fondly on my time at Cambridge, not only because of the fantastic educational experience it was, but also because of all the wonderful people I met there; people from all walks of life and of different cultures, nationalities, and religions.
Before university, I attended a local secondary school and sixth form. I had never received private academic education before university and had to teach myself some of my A levels, and Cambridge’s STEP exams. It was a difficult process, but I came out the other end of it more confident in my own abilities and my ability to surpass my own limits. I know what it is like to struggle with work and need access to help, because I have been there myself. Through the close tuition at university, particularly the supervision (i.e. tutorial) sessions, I realised how useful tuition can be and was able to continue to exceed my own expectations.
Since leaving university, I was hired by a software development company, but quickly realised that the work wasn’t for me. I didn’t like the fact that I had spent the last four years of my life (plus many years before then) learning maths and gaining invaluable skills, only to throw most of that away for the sake of a conventional job, which led me here to become an Educator with UEG.
Outside of academia, I enjoy playing video and board games with friends. I play badminton and chess, as well as the clarinet and do Taekwondo.
