I have been teaching in some capacity since the age of 15, starting with the Minimus Latin Scheme, through which I volunteered as a Latin teacher at my local primary school. In addition, I taught young pupils English and Maths using the bespoke NumberWorks’nWords software as a paid teaching assistant, while volunteering with AgeUK teaching EFL to elderly foreign nationals.
My private teaching began as a way of earning money during my gap year, but soon became something I genuinely enjoyed and found fulfilling. To that end, although the time I could devote to tutoring was limited by my full-time studies and numerous extra-curricular activities, I nonetheless managed to teach more than 15 students over the years, with my longest-running for five years and amassing approximately 500 hours of experience in total.
In the summer of 2018, I also spent my summer working as a volunteer teacher of English, Social Sciences, and Citizenship at a school in Thali, Kathmandu, with the HVP-Nepal network. This entailed teaching 4 classes of up to 40 children (aged 5 to 15) every day, as well as setting homework and designing their next set of examinations.
As evinced by my educational portfolio to date, which comprises an eclectic mix of History, Business Management, and Philosophy, I am interested in a wide range of subjects, especially as they relate to the world at large.
Philosophy, in particular, appeals to me for its inherently questioning and sceptical nature that refuses to accept orthodoxy. In addition, I am fascinated by and keen to explore what light it can shed on history, politics, ethics, aesthetics, and even the contemporary ‘crisis of mental health’. This curious and inquisitive attitude is something I try to instil in my students, regardless of what they are studying.
In my spare time, I try to do as much reading as possible, which includes history, philosophy, and also literature. Some of my favourite authors include George Eliot and Thomas Hardy, as well as the more recent Elena Ferrante and Jhumpa Lahiri. In addition, I enjoy listening to Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and Nick Cave, whose best works I believe are akin to poetry.
To wind down, I like to go on regular runs and, wherever possible, long walks in nature, preferably by the sea. Lockdown also introduced me to the soothing benefits of cooking, and I have begun trying out new recipes from around the world.
