Course Overview

This course is designed for A-Level students interested in, or expecting to study mathematics or a similar degree at university. Pedagogically, it aims to introduce the student to the much more formal exposition of university-level mathematics, but with a steady flow of concrete examples to ease the transition. In terms of content, the course aims to demonstrate how major areas of mathematics, such as linear algebra, group theory, representation theory, can be regarded as the applications of different structures to sets; that is, as falling under a generalised rubric. The first component, on set theory, is foundational; for a shorter course, the student can just take one of linear algebra or group theory; if the student wishes to take the final module on representation theory, both are required. Any topic can be elaborated on considerably, and since the exposition is through a generalised rubric, there is scope to include further topics. There are detailed course notes and short homework.
