Feminism has come a long way to give women the rights they currently have; receive an in-depth understanding of the history of feminism and its relevance nowadays.
This course guides students through key events in feminist history. Starting from the ‘first wave’ of feminism introduced by Mary Wollstonecraft in the Victorian Era, students read and discuss key feminist extracts from texts such as The Second Sex and The Yellow Wallpaper. These Forster their understanding of how the fight for equality has changed over past century, and how feminist priorities have shifted. Students learn about the patriarchy and how it manifests in the contemporary world, as well as exploring all the mechanisms which have been used to subjugate women in the past.
The key elements of womanhood which will be discussed are: female bodies in media, the historical stigma of virginity, motherhood, medicalization of the womb, fear and control of women and women in the workplace.
The course will also touch upon gender theory, and critically evaluate womanhood through the eyes of transgender women, lesbian women and the LGBTQ+ community at large.
