academic-development

Course Overview

This course offers an insight into its core elements of foreign language teaching. Students are provided with the historical overview of the most important methods of English language teaching, the concept of principled eclecticism, the post-method era and the main trends in the contemporary foreign language teaching. The methods and approaches are introduced as they emerged chronologically in the course of history of methodology of teaching and each of them are scrutinized for its advantages, as well as its shortcomings. The most important part of each of the lessons is understanding the applicability of the techniques and procedures pertaining to each of the approaches in a modern classroom, as each of them has psychological reasoning and has had successful outcomes throughout history behind leading to its emergence. Finally, students are given guidance as to how to use these as a part of their eclectic approach to teaching in a modern context in a post-method era, using accessible multimedia. As a most recent and effective tool, we define the contributions of the CEFR (The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) as a comprehensive, transparent and coherent frame of reference for language learning, to a renewal of modern language teaching and we discuss as concretely as possible how a language teacher can exploit the resources offered by these tools.
