Over the last two years, I have taken on various teaching work. In the 2018 Summer Term, I privately taught a boy studying drama A-level to help him prepare for the written exams. He was struggling a lot with the course, and he was able to achieve a B result (with a previous D mock result).
I work freelance for Wimbledon High School, where I run an 8-week workshop series for drama A-level students. This is to help them with the design elements of the exam specification - each student finishes the workshop course with finalised designs which they then present to me (and receive feedback and assessment). Additionally, I work freelance for Italia Conti Academy of Performing Arts as a dissertation Educator. I teach the students about approaching design for their performances. As well as a practical focus, I also advise the students with the written element of their dissertation. Aside from workshops and private educating, I also design for school productions (Ibstock Place School, Dulwich College) and work as a supervisor for a youth theatre group (Young Pleasance) at the Edinburgh Fringe. As a result, I work confidently with children/young adults as I have obtained a lot of experience.
Since completing my master's degree at Wimbledon College of Arts, I worked freelance as a theatre designer. Teaching has been an amazing job to support my creative career. Teaching remains the only job where I am able to gain the same fulfilment that I do when designing. Especially when teaching English or theatre, it still feels connected to my industry work and means I can draw on my own experiences, which can often be very engaging for young students. My design workshops at Wimbledon High were a success as I provided a plethora of visual stimuli and references, which allowed me to really keep the attention of the class and get them excited about the course. The class were always really excited about our sessions which I found extremely rewarding. I want to keep students engaged and excited about the subjects so that my teaching sessions become enjoyable for them, as well as informative. My varied university qualifications have also equipped me with a range of knowledge that makes me an effective educator.
Whilst my bachelor's degree was in theatre & performance, the course incorporated such a range of topics, mediums, and modules. It was 40% practical and 60% theoretical. In this 60%, I was thrown a dynamic range of subjects; investigating texts old and new, social, political and historical contexts, human psychology and the modern-day psyche, as well as the study of language and finally how we articulate these studies through written explorations. This allows me to be confident in educating both drama and English as I have found immense overlap.
My master's also required written elements which threw new topics my way and allowed me to retain and refine my academic skills. These skills make me an excellent Educator for essay-based subjects such as English, drama and history. Having completed my A-levels in 2012, I have eight years of life and industry experience to make me a better teacher to students. However, it was recent enough that I can still relate and connect with the students about how the current exam systems work and the pressure a lot of students are put under. I also have a current understanding of exam boards and the requirements. As well as private teaching and running class workshops, I am currently hosting a Start Designing scheme in which I am mentoring four emerging designers (currently via Skype), which has already proven to be a success. So I am also experienced with teaching via online video interfaces such as Skype and Zoom.
