Course Overview

This course is a study of Michael Morpurgo's most successful novel, War Horse. War Horse is a poignant World War One Story. The reason for its success is that it tells an experience of War, from a horse's point of view. It's a moving, evocative piece of literature that will provide students with a new perspective of War. It also has the advantage of being adapted, both for Theatre and Film. This has enabled the book to reach a worldwide audience, making it a known story globally, despite its European setting. It also provides other mediums for the students to look at. This nine-part course will take the class through the novel, requiring reading between sessions. We will investigate the themes, breakdown of characters, metaphors and similes, motifs and imagery and the 1914 context of the story.
