These lessons are focused on unwrapping the genius of William Golding in his masterwork, 'Lord of the Flies.' Students are encouraged to contribute to free debate and perfect their writing style.
This is a ten-lesson course on William Golding's 'Lord of The Flies,' which is often rated as one of literature's greatest prizes. Containing important themes such as war, power, mob mentality and human savagery, Golding's novel was originally a response to the rise of Nazism. However, 'Lord of the Flies' consistently resonates with the modern political climate as Golding's themes are, in fact, timeless and universal. The conflict between the civilising instinct and the barbarizing instinct that exists in all human beings will always impact universal human nature. So, whilst an energetic, dynamic, playful and dangerous story; it also makes significant social, political and psychological commentary. The programme will go through the novel, chapter by chapter (students are required to read between the sessions). The sessions will then analyse the chapters, looking at themes, language, symbols and motifs. The sessions will be concluded with a lesson on possible essay topics to frame a group discussion. Students will also be provided with digital handouts and a digital copy of the novel. Students may also wish to participate in a combination course: 'Utopias and Dystopias: A Comparison of 'Lord of the Flies' and 'Animal Farm''. This separate lesson series will give students a chance to study these iconic pieces of literature side-by-side.
