Shakespeare's 'Othello' For Key Stage 4

Course Overview

This programme guides students through one of Shakespeare's most revolutionary works: 'Othello'. 'Othello' is an important piece of literature for students to engage with. Despite being written in 1603, it equally resonates with and provokes modern audiences. As well as investigating themes of jealousy, love, manipulation and justice, it most crucially explores prejudice. By containing a black protagonist, Shakespeare was really presenting something very progressive. When presenting 'Othello' today (within any setting or concept), the narrative facilitates a discussion about any sort of prejudice and isolation. Therefore, it remains a really significant, critical and engaging piece of literature. This course will require all students to read the text before the course begins. While students will go through the play chronologically, the course will approach the text with a more in-depth analysis. The lessons will examine themes more critically and will also incorporate a plethora of references. These references will include previous theatre productions, as well as academic reviews and assessments. The programme will not only provide students with a thorough understanding of 'Othello' but also provoke them to ask questions, think critically and explore social and political discussions surrounding the narrative.
