Course Overview

In a world where information is more readily available than ever before, learning to think critically about what you read online has become a crucial life skill. This global current affairs course will help students to develop the ability to analyse news sources and to critically engage with current affairs publications. Each lesson shall cover one important topic in current affairs, from the conflict in Hong Kong to the future of Artificial Intelligence, and students shall be presented with two or more contrasting news articles on the same topic. The lessons shall begin with learning about the factual events that are being discussed in each article, in order to arm the students with the information they need to be able to detect biases, shortcomings or false information in the news. The lessons shall then move on to reading, critiquing and comparing the contrasting articles presented. The course shall follow the OPVL (Origin, Purpose, Values, Limitations) framework for source analysis - an excellent framework which will also serve students throughout their secondary and university education. There is an emphasis on the global nature of this course, as it incorporates issues from around the world and across a range of topics.
