Course Overview

In this unit students will explore the causes and impacts of flooding around the world. Students will begin the course by studying the hydrological cycle and the ways in which humans can influence it. Students will then explore the various causes of flooding and categorise them into human and physical causes. Through these examples, students must decide which factors have more of an influence on modern-day events. Students then look at climate change and the reasons why climate change is leading to increased flooding. Students will examine different hydrographs and draw their own. Students will then explore case study examples comparing flooding in Bangladesh and the USA. In this example, they will look at flooding events from 2011-2015 and Hurricane Katrina. Through these examples, students will compare why flooding in LICs seems to have greater impacts than flooding in HICs. Students will finally explore the various ways that we can protect ourselves from flooding and look at soft and hard flood management methods. Students will assess which ones are more appropriate for Bangladesh. For the assessment students will complete an essay, making a decision about how we can help protect Bangladesh from flooding.
