Course Overview

Throughout the unit, students will explore tectonic activity around the world. Firstly, students will study different patterns of tectonic activity around the world and the reasons behind these patterns. Students will be able to explain the three types of plate boundaries that cause earthquakes and volcanoes. Students will learn how the damage each type can cause is based on various factors, such as the focasl point, the level of urbanisation, and the country's GDP. Students will be given a chance to explore these constituent parts and synthesize understanding on their impacts by looking at volcanic eruptions in Iceland and the Philippines, as well as earthquakes in Haiti and Japan. Through these examples, students will be able to explain why LEDCs are more impacted by tectonic activity than MEDCs. Finally, students will explore how we can reduce the impacts of volcanos and earthquakes.
