Writing a newspaper report is a challenging task for many young students, but this course will equip them with the necessary skills to produce a high-quality journalistic report.
On this course, students will look at and analyse newspaper articles, looking at both the structure employed and content created by the best journalists. These examples will be used in order to teach students the skills needed to write an excellent newspaper report. These skills will include techniques such as the role of direct and reported speech, how tone can change depending on who is speaking and passive voice writing. Students will then be encouraged to choose their own newspaper title; this could be something real or imaginary and inspired by photos or the real world. There will be support throughout the planning and writing process of writing a newspaper report, incorporating all the learning across the ten sessions to ensure the final piece is of top quality. These sessions can be run multiple times a week and be used as a platform for assisting Key Stage 2 students. All sessions are planned with the upper key stage two curriculum requirements in mind, in order to secure knowledge of what is required. Most primary schools will require their students to write a newspaper report before moving to high school, and as one of the trickier writing outcomes, this will serve as great course with transferable skills.
