Course Overview

L´Étranger: the ´strangeness´ of Meursault makes him come across as an outcast to the point that foreigners in the novel seem less strange to his peers than he is. This paradoxical situation reflects normality and exclusion in a society where freedom and justice are an illusion. This course provides students with valuable insights and skills through an in-depth analysis of the key issues the novel explores, whilst sharpening their literary skills by becoming familiar with the complex philosophical universe of Camus, influenced by his peers and Nietzsche’s nihilism. Each lesson will be the opportunity for a critical analysis of an aspect of the novel and essay-writing practice.
