Course Overview

The history of the twentieth century is often taught through dates, figures and events which do not reflect the full story. By looking more closely at popular culture, this course picks apart the complex ideologies, identities and emotions which shaped and were shaped by these ‘surface-level’ events of history. How were social changes reflected through music? How did art respond to the World Wars? What role did new mass media play in driving political change? By examining culture and ‘history from below’, this course answers these questions interrogatively.
