Course Overview

This literary and historical course offers students the chance to develop a well-rounded and in-depth understanding of the most pivotal period of France’s history: The Enlightenment. Students learn about the volatility of French society during this period, including the vast range of new ideas that emerged to challenge existing hierarchies. These ideas are looked at through the medium of literature which, in the eighteenth century, proved to be more subversive and exciting than ever. By studying three forms of literature (the novel, the play and the philosophical essay) students are able to delve into some of the Enlightenment’s most seditious texts and their authors. By the end of the course, students have a more developed understanding of some of the key ideas that shook French society and brought down France’s monarchy in 1792.
