Course Overview



This course will explore Western post-war and contemporary art movements, beginning in the 1940s with Abstract Expressionism and ending with contemporary art of the 21st century. In each class, students will listen to a lecture-style overview of the week's topic or works and take part in a group discussion of the themes raised and analysis of artworks. By the end of the course, students will have had an introduction to major art movements from 1940 to the present and the key artists associated with them. As well as an examination of key works of art from these movements informed by formal, cultural and historical analysis of them. Students will also consider the various methodologies used by art historians to evaluate works of art through the assigned readings.
